The Bonny Doon Studio Tour was started in 2010, inspired by Kim Sterling and Linda Levy, along with a host of Bonny Doon Artists. Many of the artists participated in Santa Cruz County's Open Studios Tour, which happens in the month of October. Since Bonny Doon is a bit of a trek from Santa Cruz, and gets twice as much rain, the number of Open Studios visitors to our area was diminishing.
For this reason, Kim and Linda worked to make Bonny Doon an arts destination, and present the studio tour during the last weekend in July, a much better time weatherwise to visit the Doon.
Since that time, the Bonny Doon Studio Tour has given local artists an opportunity to engage visitors in their art forms. In addition to showing selections of their fine art work, the artists are happy to talk about their work and inspiration. Many artists provide demonstrations of how they create their art or prepare "hands-on" experiences for visitors.
In 2020 the event could not be held because of the Covid 19 epidemic. In August of that same year, many Bonny Doon artists were affected by the CZU fire, which destroyed over 800 homes in the area.
In 2021, as the Covid epidemic receded, Bonny Doon artists once again opened their studios to visitors, who turned out in droves. Since then, we have continued to offer this unique event while maintaining masking and social distancing requirements as necessary.
